Calogena, a French startup specializing in innovative nuclear technologies, has submitted its safety option application (DOS) for a 30 MW thermal nuclear boiler designed for urban heating networks. This facility, which uses uranium fuel, aims to provide cities with carbon-free heat and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Key Milestones and Regulatory Process
The application marks a significant step for Calogena, supported by the Gorgé Group, after months of preparatory work with the French nuclear regulator ASN.
The project now enters a pre-assessment phase, expected to last about two years, before moving to the next regulatory step: the creation authorization application (DAC).
ASN has confirmed receipt of the file and the start of the preliminary assessment.
Technical and Safety Features
Calogena’s solution is based on “pool-type” research reactor technology, recognized for enhanced safety and well-known to regulators.
These small modular reactors (SMRs) are much smaller than traditional nuclear reactors, making them suitable for installation near urban centers.
The design incorporates multiple safety barriers to prevent core meltdown, addressing a central concern in nuclear safety.
Market Potential and Strategic Positioning
The urban heating market, particularly in Northern and Eastern Europe, presents a substantial commercial opportunity, estimated at tens of billions of euros.
Calogena is exploring several sites in France and Finland for its first installation1.
The project uses commercially available fuel and leverages an existing reprocessing chain, adding to its practicality and sustainability.
Competitive Landscape
Calogena is emerging as a pioneer in the French SMR sector, with its project focused solely on heat production rather than electricity.
Other players, such as EDF (with the Nuward project) and startups like Jimmy, are also pursuing SMR solutions, but Calogena is currently seen as the French startup closest to commercializing a functional SMR for urban heating.
This initiative positions Calogena at the forefront of low-carbon urban heating solutions, aligning with growing European demand for sustainable energy alternatives.
