Context
Calogena was founded within the Gorgé industrial group with a mission to develop, commercialize, build, and operate small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) to provide carbon-free district heating. The Calogena reactor, with a power output of 30 MWth, is designed with inherent safety features, ensuring robust and reliable performance. Calogena is laureate of France 2030 initiative and has been selected by the European Commission in the frame of the European industrial alliance for SMR.
Today, the Calogena reactor stands as the most mature SMR project in France. Currently in the Conceptual Design phase, the project will transition into Basic Design phase in 2025, followed by the construction of the first reactor In Cadarache before 2032.
Calogena is experiencing very strong commercial traction, with many municipalities interested in the solution to decarbonize their district heating networks. Some cities are investigating to use nuclear energy for district heating. The first tendering process and EIA have been started in Finland.
As Finland is leading the race towards carbon-free district heating, Calogena has decided to enter the Finnish market. Calogena is looking for a highly motivated Licensing & Safety Engineer for Finland to help make nuclear for district heating a reality.
Position summary:
The Licensing & Safety Engineer in Finland will work in close cooperating with the CTO and the Head of Licensing, located in Calogena’s premises in Aix-en-Provence, on all matters related to licensing, regulatory oversight functions, regulatory and environmental compliance and safety design in the Finnish context.
The Licensing & Safety Engineer Finland is the technical referent of the project based in Finland and provides support to the reactor design team based in France, in safety and environmental matters. The Licensing & Safety Engineer is the interface and coordinator between the design team located in France and the Finnish authorities. He/ she will be the main point of contact for Calogena with the Finnish Nuclear and Radiation Authority (STUK).
The Licensing & Safety Engineer in Finland supports the Technical Director Finland by participating in the technical development for the Design solution in Finland.
Tasks assigned :
- Work with the French Design and safety team to develop licensing compliance positions and strategies
- Contribute to the design process by providing expert input on nuclear safety choices at each design stages
- Serve as liaison to outside organizations and STUK on licensing matters.
- Prepare licensing procedures, documents, and regulatory reports to management.
- Oversee and drive Finnish Nuclear Safety and Licensing subcontractors
- Coordinate with potential clients/ partners to perform an Environmental Impact Assessment for Calogena project
- Develop technical responses to calls for tender on the Finnish market
Report to the Technical Director Finland
Candidate profile :
- Master of science in Engineering
- 5-10 years of work experience in nuclear safety or licensing position
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures associated with Nuclear Licensing in Finland, including interpretation of requirements and a demonstrated ability to identify and resolve licensing issues
- Strong skills in nuclear safety analysis and safety design of a nuclear power plant (safety systems design criteria and safety classification)
- Knowledge of Finnish Nuclear and Radiation Authority requirements (YVL Guides) for new plants and strategies with respect to those requirements (i.e. design issues, scheduling, etc.).
- Strong English written and verbal communication skills including strong technical presentation skills
- Proactively propose design modification/ adaptation to maximize licensing ability, while keeping a strict “design-to-cost” approach
- Demonstrated ability to work well in an international environment. The job requires an efficient team work with the design team located in France.
